Caffeine Addiction

What is Caffeine Addiction?

Caffeine addiction is when you consume so much caffeine (coffee) that your body is expecting it all of the time. Some people can become slightly "addicted" to caffeine within less than a week of drinking just 1-2 cups of coffee while others may require larger doses.

What is Addiction?

Addiction is the body or brains phsycial or emotional need for a substance to feel "normal." The term "addiction" carries a lot of negative connotations with it in today's society. Even if the addiction is only to a drug as seemingly harmless as caffeine the word itself is just a negative word. The CSPI estimates that over 4/5 people in the United States have caffeine everyday with the average consumption hoving at around 200mg/person. This means that most people here are exposed to some level of the drug and could become addicted to caffeine at some point in their lives.

What is Caffeine?

Caffeine is a dug naturally created within leaves and seeds of many common plants. Caffeine addiction occurs in part because this drug is the most widely used and abused drug in America. The drug itself belongs to a group of stimulants called xanthines. While most people have to wait 30-60 minutes to feel the effects of caffeine they usually wear off within 5-7 hours after consumption. The 30-60 minute time delay upon feeling it's effects adds to the addictiveness of caffeinated products in general. The quicker the onset of positive experiences associated with a drug the more addicting it usually is. Caffeine products work by stimulating your respitory sytem, heart, and nervous system.
